São Paulo – Day four

Monday, March 3rd 2008 (the last day)

Once again I slept very little, for a little bit more than 4 hours. I did pretty much nothing during the morning, just stayed on the sofa watching TV and eating corn flakes. At around 11:00 a.m. my friends from Rio called and invited me for a walk at the Ibirapuera park. After that we went to the Ibirapuera Shopping Centre, which is one of the fanciest malls in SP. There we ate at Burger King, and then I said good-bye to my friends because they had to catch the plane back to Rio in the middle of the afternoon. As for me, I decided to walk around the mall and head towards the nearest Doceria Holandesa, where they sell one of the best sweets in SP.

After that I decided to go to the cinema and why not a cinema in Paulista Avenue? Gotta love this avenue, man! Everything happens there! Unfortunately the hours of the films I wanted to see were quite bad! In the meantime my friend Renato Tribuzy had already called me asking what time I would catch the bus back to Rio, because he would like to go back with me. So we decided to leave SP in the same hour we left Rio 4 days ago. Anyway, since I was in Paulista Ave. why not stop by Starbucks once more? And that was when I tried their chocolate Frappuccino! Bloody hell!!! That was delicious! We definitely need a Starbucks in Rio, definitely!!

After that caught the bus back to the flat and I was stuck in a mega traffic jam. But that’s São Paulo, man! You gotta love the Caos! hehe Back at the flat I had to clean everything, wash all the dishes, and stuff like that, because I had to deliver the flat the same way I received it, right? I’m a responsible guy!

Arrived at the bus station at almost midnight, met Renato and we bought the 12:40 a.m. tickets. This time I only remember the bus leaving the station and nothing more! By the time I woke up we were already at Rio’s bus station! I got back home, dropped my bags and went straight to work. And that’s the end of my São Paulo saga.

São Paulo – Day two

Saturday, March 1st 2008

Despite the fact that I went to bed at almost 3 a.m. the previous night, I woke up at 6:57 a.m. (damn biological clock!). I prepared breakfast, watched some TV and then the phone rang. Two friends of mine had just arrived in SP from Rio and we had agreed that we would do a walking tour through SP historical downtown starting at Praça da República and finishing in Liberdade (the Japanese neighborhood). The tour was great and we passed by Rock Gallery, Viaduto do Chá, Vale do Anhangabaú, Pátio do Colégio, Banespa Building, Mosteiro de São Bento, and Catedral da Sé. Anyway, after arriving in Liberdade and having seen a bit of the Japanese culture we decided to have lunch at Paulista Avenue. And that’s when we decided to go to Starbucks. Can you believe it was my first time in Starbucks? Unbelievable! We don’t have it in Rio and we don’t have Burger King in Rio as well, go figure why! After having lunch we went to MASP and Itaú Cultural. After that we said good-bye, and I went back to the apartment where I was staying. I was so damn tired but I had invited Alexandre and his girlfriend to have dinner there, so I still had to prepare it. I prepared a very simple meal: Fettuccine Alfredo, and we ate that watchin the Live After Death DVD.

After dinner we went to Manifesto Bar, where a Brazilian Maiden cover band called Children of the Beast would perform. We went there mostly because we knew that the guys from the official Maiden TV would be there filming stuff for the documentary to feature on the next Maiden DVD. Anyway, the gig itself was amazing! I was very surprised by the fact that the cover band is so bloody similar to Maiden themselves! Same stage decoration, same instruments, same stage attitude. they seemed Maiden clones! hehe While the gig was happening I looked upstairs several times to see the reaction on the Maiden TV guys’ faces. They were truly enjoying themselves. And that’s when I noticed Lauren Harris (Steve Harris daughter!) was there with her sister! Lauren is hot, her sister is cute. Honestly I preferred her sister! hehe One of the nicest moments of the evening was when the band did a break for a few minutes, the guys from Maiden TV went downstairs. One of them stopped in front of me and started to stare at me! I was wearing a West Ham United t-shirt (on purpose! I knew it would cause some reactions). And we had this brief dialogue:

He: How can you support that shit team?

Me: And you, what team do you support?

He yelled: Aston Villa!

Me: Well, fair enough!

He: Yeah, well… Fair enough! Fair enough! Nice to meet you mate! cheers!

Then he hugged me and left! Nice chap he was! hehe

We left Manifesto at 4:30 a.m. and I got back at the flat at 5 a.m. That was the end of a great Saturday!

São Paulo – Day one

Friday, September 29th 2008

I was waiting for my friend Renato Tribuzy to call me so we could go to the bus station together. As we arrived there we bought the tickets for the 12:40 a.m. bus on Friday and we went straight to the waiting room and wait for the bus while chatting and drinking. That’s when he warned me that he doesn’t usually sleep on the bus and he would probably spend the whole 6 hours trip talking. Once in the bus we kept talking for a while (30 minutes or a bit more), and then there was some silence. I turned my head to the left and there he was, sleeping as a baby! I was having a lot of trouble sleeping, and that’s not usual because whenever I go to São Paulo, I go pretty much at the same time and I sleep well and only wake up when the bus gets to SP. Anyway, I suddenly felt asleep but some minutes later the bus made a stop at the state border (so people could rest their legs, eat or drink some stuff) and I woke up again. When the bus resumed the trip I, once again, had trouble getting back to sleep. By the time I managed to sleep it started to rain heavily and I woke up with the loud noise. Then I stayed awake till we arrive in SP. i must have slept for 2 hours during the whole trip! Arriving at the bus stop we had some coffee and made a stop in a newsstand to buy the paper. Renato was going to stay at a friend’s house and I was going to stay at my friend Alexandre flat. So we took the underground (blue line, and then green line) to where Renato was supposed to meet his friend and I was going with them because I was offered a ride and couldn’t say no! hehe

Anyway, we arrived where I was going to stay and I said good-bye. It was time to meet my good friend Alexandre and I was bit late since he had to go to work. He showed me the flat, showed me the surroundings from the balcony and that’s pretty much it. He was off to work! Then I thought: I need food! So, I went to the nearest supermarket and bought lots of good/expensive stuff. Gotta love the supermarkets in SP, they have everything you can imagine!). Back at the apartment I put the things in the fridge and called my other friend Juliana. She invited me to go to her place. So, there I was after a couple of hours (that’s what it took to walk to the underground station, getting lost, find the way again, taking the underground and then taking the bus), we caught up for a while (it had been like 2 years since I last saw her) and I met her lovely dog called Kika! So cute! hehehe Spend a couple of hours there and then decided to go back to the flat to have a shower, change clothes because Alexandre, Juliana and I were going to Marise’s (a friend of ours) house at night for a pizza.

The thing is that on my way back home the bus went through Paulista Avenue. Come on, Paulista Avenue! I couldn’t resist, so I got off the bus and went for a loooong walk along and surrounding it (including Oscar Freire street). It was already getting late and I was so near Marise’s house that I thought: hmmm, I guess I’ll straight to her house from here. And then I thought again: No! I think Alexandre is going to pass by the apartment to pick me up, and I think I need a shower! So, back at the apartment (on the other side of the city) I did everything I was supposed to do and then I waited. I waited for Alexandre to drop by. It was getting late and no sign of him at all. Well, I phoned him and guess what? He was already at Marise’s house. Actually everybody was already there and they were waiting for me!! At that moment I thought: Bloody hell! Why did I come back home? I should have gone straight to her house! And now it’s raining!! Oh no!!! Anyway, 40 minutes later I was there, we ate, drank, watched a dvd and talked for a long time. I had lots of fun! It had been 2 years since the whole gang was all together. At around 2 a.m. we left and Alexandre gave me a ride back home. It was time to go to bed because Saturday was going o be a busy day!
