Carey Mulligan, write down this name! I’ve just watched An Education, and I was extremely surprised by her performance. That’s one of the best performance from an actress that I’ve seen in the past few years. I Can’t even remember the last time I felt this way by an actress. The film, which is the first screenplay written by Nick Hornby (another favourite of mine), is indeed very good and Carey’s performance makes it excellent. Of course she has help from a very good cast, which features among others Emma Thompson and Alfred Molina, but Carey herself makes the film very enjoyable to watch. I won’t be surprised if she wins the Oscar for best actress. It would be very deserving! Have I mentioned that she’s British and has a sexy accent? This definitely one of the many reasons why she is now one of my favourite actresses!
The film is set in the early 1960′s, and sixteen year old Jenny Mellor (Carey Mulligan) lives with her parents in the London suburb of Twickenham. On her father’s wishes, everything that Jenny does is in the sole pursuit of being accepted into Oxford, as he wants her to have a better life than his. Jenny is bright, pretty, hard working but also naturally gifted. The only problems her father may perceive in her life is her issue with learning Latin, and her dating a boy named Graham, who is nice but socially awkward. Jenny’s life changes after she meets David Goldman, a man over twice her age. David goes out of his way to show Jenny and her family that his interest in her is not improper and that he wants solely to expose her to cultural activities which she enjoys. Of course David’s intentions are others and in order to know about them, I recommend you to watch the film. You won’t regret.
