Here’s the 2nd part of the Curiosities from Beijing. The first post was a success (got loads of visitors), so I’ll surely keep posting them during the Olympics.
Package: in Beijing if you want to carry your good when you leave a supermarket you must pay for your plastic bags. Can you believe that? At book stores the same happens. So, if you’re not willing to have the extra costs you have to carry your products as shown in the picture below:

Olympics opening Ceremony on DVD: The day after the ceremony the DVD was already available on every store in Beijing. As you may have know, China has the biggest pirate dvd market in the world. My question is: is this dvd a licensed product?

FIRE EXTINGUISHER: The Chinese people have big problems with the English language. They’re doing their best to translate all the street signs in Beijing for the Olympics, but the result is not always satisfactory as you can see below:
Hydrant
Newsstand: Look what I great idea this is! Instead of screaming all the time, this guy had the idea of recording himself and play it on a megaphone on repeat mode! Smart guy!

Nail Trim: Specially made for the people who can’t see very well. Mind your finger!

Li Ning: Li Ning, 45, the guy who lit the olympic torch is a big hero in China! In the L.A. Olympics he won 6 medals in gymnastics. He retired two years after and became a successfull businessman. He owns a sports goods brand spread all over China. Look at the picture below, is there just a mere coincidence?

Actually, Nando, where I live in Nova Scotia, there is a popular grocery store that charges 5 cents for every plastic grocery bags, and there is a large grocery chain that has stopped carrying plastic bags in one or two test locations. All major grocery stores and other big retail outlets are selling reusable bags for a dollar. I’ve developed the habit of taking them with me to go shopping.
